Here at Coco Collection we love and admire our resident Sea Turtles and we do everything we can to protect them and their natural environment.
The critically endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtles are commonly found around both Coco Bodu Hithi and Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, they frequent our house reefs and we often have the chance to observe them during our snorkeling and diving excursions.
The endangered Green Sea Turtles are less frequently seen around our islands but they are very loyal to Dhuni Kolhu’s beaches during nesting time, where we get the unique chance to meet these amazing animals!
In order for us to monitor our sea turtle visitors and to better understand their migrations and frequency around our islands we have implemented a Sea Turtle Identification Program.
Every time we encounter a Sea Turtle we take 3 pictures for individual identification: FULL BODY, LEFT SIDE of the HEAD and RIGHT SIDE of the HEAD.
Every Sea Turtle has different scale shapes on the head, like a fingerprint, and this is the only recognizable feature that lasts for its entire long life.
Whenever we find a new individual, we give it a CODE:
HK (for Hawksbill) or G (for Green)+ NUMBER + NAME
At the moment the Coco Collection Sea Turtles Database has 25 different turtles identified and named but there are many more to yet identify!
Coco Collection guests are warmly invited to come and meet our Sea Turtles and to help us with our identification programme, where you may even get the chance to name the sea turtles.
