Protecting the ocean and the marine life within it is an important cause that we contribute to and raise awareness about. Various initiatives and activities take place on Coco Bodu Hithi and Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu throughout the year to support important environmental causes.
To celebrate World Oceans Day on 8th June, our Marine Biologist Chiara Fumagalli gathered some eager associates at the Spa Beach of Coco Bodu Hithi to plant a new coral garden in the lagoon. Our helpful associates at the engineering department prepared a metal frame to which the coral pieces were going to be attached.
After collecting some naturally broken coral pieces from the lagoon, they were kept in salt water boxes until they were fixed onto the metal structures. In the afternoon, more associates and interested guests dropped by the beach where Chiara gave a short briefing about the coral planting initiative at Coco Bodu Hithi and how the nurseries have grown over the past 2 years.
Afterwards, the pieces of coral were carefully fixed onto the metal structure and the coral nursery was planted in the lagoon area close to the beach. From here on, the structure will be monitored continuously to ensure that all the corals remain attached and have begun to encrust the metal.
These coral gardens contribute to the enrichment of the lagoon and will help to attract more marine life to the area. The coral frames planted in October 2012 in the Coco Bodu Hithi lagoon have now matured beautifully into a small coral garden.
Meanwhile in Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, enthusiastic guests and associates had a fun afternoon cleaning the lagoon and doing their part to conserve our oceans. Initiatives such as these are only possible because of guests who share our environmental convictions as well as because of our hardworking associates who continue to raise awareness about important environmental issues.
Together we have the power to protect the ocean!
