Every great project starts with a vision. We at Coco Collection have the vision of helping severely injured sea turtles, providing them with shelter and aid until their recovery. In 2015, we partnered with an organisation that shares our vision: the Olive Ridley Project. Together, we work on making the vision of Coco Collection’s Turtle Rescue Centres a reality.
Which day could be better to celebrate our vision than World Turtle Day?
At Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu, we kicked-off the location of our first Turtle Rescue Centre. Marked with an information board and goal meter, it is now visible for our guests where we will build a shelter for injured sea turtles.
With the generous help of our guests and partners, we have collected 50% of the proceeds required. With every donation, every purchase of an ORP Turtle Plush Toy and every adopted sea turtle, you are part of our project.
A passionate group of guests at Coco Palm followed the invitation of resident marine biologist Tina to a Turtle Adventure Snorkel trip at Muthaafushi house reef. The goal: to spot as many Hawksbill sea turtles as possible and … their biggest threats: Floating plastic and ghost nets!
To everyone’s relief, the water was blue and clean, without signs of ghost nets or drifting plastic items. The perfect conditions to enjoy swimming with one of Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu’s identified Hawksbill sea turtles HK884 IRENE. It was a special experience to swim alongside IRENE for more than 30 minutes. What a friendly turtle!
World Turtle Day dinner buffet at Coco Palm Dhuni Kolhu deserved its name: In every corner of the buffet, you could find beautiful turtles carved from vegetables, created by our talented F&B team. We paired creativity with food on this special occasion and for our guests, it was hard to decide: should I eat it or take a picture?
To close this very special day, Tina gave a presentation about the biology, life cycle and threats of sea turtles at Conch bar. Inspired by Tina’s words, several guests decided to adopt four newly identified sea turtles. Hawksbill sea turtles HK2522 FATIMA, HK2533 MUSTAFA, HK2510 TOOMEE and Green sea turtle GR406 GRABBY now belong to their new namesakes. Thank you for your contribution! We have never doubted that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world and we are delighted you are part of it.
At Coco Bodu Hithi, we started World Turtle Day with a snorkelling excursion to Bodu Hithi turtle point. This reef is home to at least 50 identified Hawksbill sea turtles and therefore a great attraction. Our guests took the chance to join resident marine biologist Lisa on this special excursion dedicated to Coco Bodu Hithi’s rich sea turtle population.
Juvenile Hawksbill sea turtle HK2095 CJBEN made an appearance during our snorkelling session and left guests in awe! Swimming eye to eye with a wild sea turtle is an experience you should not miss!
Later that day, the associates of Coco Bodu Hithi gathered for a Sand Sea Turtle Building Competition. The lucky winner awaited a homemade turtle cake and a beautifully handcrafted turtle-shaped trophy!
Since our associates are strong team players, groups formed very quickly to work together on the most beautiful sand sea turtle. Every team showed outstanding creativity, effort and knowledge on sea turtle biology and most of all…they had a lot of fun!
It was a tough decision to choose the winning team! Each sand sea turtle turned out to be a unique piece of art.
After consulting the judges, General Manager Georgios Papazoglou announced the winners of this year’s Sand Sea Turtle Building Competition: The most creative team with the least harmful impact on the environment. The winners used only natural items to decorate their sand sea turtle. Congratulations!
We celebrated World Turtle Day to honour the sea turtles that live around and nearby our island. Also to remember, that each Maldivian island is a potential nesting site for female sea turtles. We hope that you will at least have one opportunity to encounter one of these beautiful marine animals, witness a nesting or hatching during your holiday.
To all of you out there making a difference to protect our turtles, THANK YOU!
